Apple iPhone 5c: The Budget Friendly iPhone

Today Apple launched 2 new iPhones, the flagship iPhone 5s and the colorful, budget friendly iPhone 5c. The 5c is Apple's attempt to reclaim some of the lower end of the smartphone market, where they are currently losing ground to the seemingly endless number of cheap Android devices. In a nutshell it is a colorful cheaper remake of last year's iPhone 5 with iOS 7 and a few tweaks.

These tweaks include cameras enhancements, iOS 7 out of the box, increased battery capacity and support for more LTE bands. The most noticeable change is that the phones casing has gone from metal and glass to colorful (and cheaper) polycarbonate plastic. Apple's new design allows them to slash prices for the iPhone 5c to $99 on a 2 year contract for the 16GB version, or $199 for the 32GB ( $549 and $649 off-contract).

The iPhone 5c will be offered in 5 new colors blue, white, pink, yellow and green and will also launch with a variety of equally colorful cases for $29 each. It will be available for preorder and sale along side it's more feature packed brother the iPhone 5s on September 13th and 20th respectively. The iPhone 5 will be discontinued.

Apple Debuts the New iPhone 5s

Apple debuted its newest members of the iPhone family today, breaking from their normal tradition and actually releasing two variants the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c (the 5c being a more cost friendly variant). The iPhone 5s is the premier handset of the two and the next step in iPhone evolution. Following in Apple tradition, the new model strongly resembles its predecessor but has been equipped with stepped up specs in almost every category. Notable changes included a new 64-bit A7 processor that is 2x faster, M7 graphics processor with 2x the graphics performance, improved battery life (10 hours LTE browsing, 250 hours standby, 40 hours of music), upgraded 5-element Apple-designed camera lens with a 15 percent larger light sensor, auto-image stabilization, burst mode, and 120 frames-per-second slow-motion options, and most notably a fingerprint sensor, a feature Apple calls Touch ID. It is also Apple's first phone debuting iOS 7.

The new iPhone 5s will come in three color variants Silver, Space Gray, and Gold, as well as three different configurations and price points of 16GB/$199, 32GB/$299, and 64GB/$399. Pre-orders on September 13 and it goes on sale September 20 in nine different countries. The new camera and flash sound really nice and are sure to be a great enhancement over what is already one of the best camera phones. I also really like the idea of being able to unlock the phone with a fingerprint (which is not an Apple innovation, no matter what they try to say. The Motorola Atrix had this feature years ago), though with recent news of the NSA snooping on our phones, and iPhones being identified as one of the major targets, there is something unsettling about adding fingerprints to the list of collected data.

As always the new iPhone hasn't changed much physically, but there have been some meaningful changes under the hood. How many of you will be grabbing the next iPhone on the 20th? Or maybe you'd like the budget-friendly iPhone 5c.

iPhone 5 Rear Case Scratch Test shows it is highly susceptible to scratching. Video.

allthingsd is reporting that a number of Apple early adopters claim that the back case of the iPhone 5 is highly susceptible to scratching and more visible signs of wear and tear, according to multiple reports from across the Web.

Perhaps even more serious, numerous accounts state that users are receiving iPhone 5 devices damaged directly out of the packaging, before customers have had chance to actually lay hands the device.

It seems to be an issue with the anodized aluminum surface, and the apparent difficulty that comes with keeping the device from getting nicks and scrapes. It appears that the black version is either more susceptible to damage than its white counterpart, or signs of visible wear are more readily visible due to the higher contrast in colors.

Apple has not yet responded to a request for comment. A video below made by iFixitYourself where they comment the issue as follows:

Australia: iPhone 5 4G coming to Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. Plans revealed.

Apple's new 4G iPhone 5, which is due to launch in Australia on Friday September 21. Telstra, Optus and Virgin are gearing up for the first 4G iPhone, while Vodafone is offering the device on its 3G and "3G+" DC-HSPA network, ahead of a 4G launch in 2013.

The Telstra plans come in Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large sizes. Small has AU$600 in talk/MMS, unlimited text and 1GB of data per month, Medium has AU$800 in talk/mms, unlimited text and 1.5GB of data per month, while Large has AU$900 in talk/mms, unlimited text and 2GB of data per month and Extra Large has unlimited talk, text and MMS and 3GB of data per month.

The difference in value comes from handset repayments. The total monthly cost is listed below.

Vodafone has much more variety of plans, but unlike Telstra and Optus, it does not yet have a 4G network in place. The AU$30 plan comes with 200MB of data, AU$180 worth of calls, texts and voicemail; the AU$40 plan comes with 500MB of data, AU$300 worth of calls, texts and voicemail; the AU$50 plan comes with 750MB of data, AU$500 worth of calls, texts and voicemail; the AU$60 plan comes with 1GB of data, AU$700 worth of calls, texts and voicemail; the AU$80 plan comes with 2GB of data, and infinite worth of calls and texts; the AU$100 plan comes with 3GB of data, and infinite calls and texts.

Optus subsidiary Virgin has five varieties of iPhone 5 plans, ranging from AU$450 credit per month with 250MB of data, AU$650 credit per month with 500MB of data, AU$400 credit per month with 2GB of data, AU$700 credit per month with 3GB of data or Unlimited with 4GB of data per month.

While Vodafone has the very cheapest plan at AU$44 per month, it also has very little data, and is running on a network that doesn't yet have 4G capabilities. The best deals appear to lie with Virgin, which offers the most data for the lowest price. Parent company Optus runs in second place, with Vodafone coming third on price. Telstra prices have edged slightly higher on the iPhone 5, but the telco has the advantage over its rivals of having the 4G network in more locations than anyone else right now, and has locked in plans to have the network reaching two-thirds of the population by June 2013.

Optus' 4G network is currently only available in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Newcastle.

Vodafone has confirmed that the new iPhone 5 will be compatible with its 4G network which is due to launch in early 2013. Given these are 24-month contracts, in the grand scheme of things it would be around a six or seven month wait for 4G with Vodafone, and only a quarter of your contract.

iPhone 5 pre-orders first batch took an hour to sold out.

Apple’s website says “we’re currently unable to reach the carrier systems to process your order, but will reserve an iPhone for you.”

Pre-orders for the September 21 debut became available at 3:01 am ET Friday and sold out within an hour. In comparison, the iPhone 4S, which represented a smaller upgrade, took nearly a day to sell out.

People looking to snatch one up on launch day can still do so at Apple's retail stores at 8 a.m. local time. Historically, there have been long lines at these events, although Apple has worked to increase staff and inventory levels ahead of these releases in recent years.

Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint, the three carriers that will support the new phone, all say on their websites that it is possible to pre-order for arrival on launch day on September 21. It is unclear, however, if those measures represent current inventory levels.

The new phone represents a substantial upgrade to the iPhone 4S. It is made completely of aluminum and glass, with a taller screen, faster processor, better camera and a host of other improvements.
